Hunger drive posterAccording to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual study measuring food security in the United States, the number of Americans living in food insecure homes reached nearly 49 million in 2011 (the most recent year that such data is available). Perhaps most alarming is the fact that more than 16 million children in America - more than 1 in 5 - are faced with the prospect of hunger.  Last year, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) National Food Drive collected more than 70 million pounds of food in one day for individuals and families in communities throughout the United States.  letter carrier driveFor the nineteenth year, United Way Worldwide will partner with the NALC National Food Drive scheduled for this Saturday, May 12.  Campbell Soup Company and its partners are producing post cards and shopping bags that will be delivered to more than 90 million homes across the country as a reminder to participate in the drive . In addition, Campbell will again support this year’s food collection effort by donating one million pounds of food to Feeding America.  You can help Stamp Out Hunger by 1) filling a sturdy bag with non-perishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, cereal and rice; and 2) place your donated goods next to your mailbox and your letter carrier will pick them up.  Learn more about this annual event by clicking here, or visit the Facebook page.

Flavor of SLO

What a wonderful day it was on May 6th for the Flavor of SLO!   We hosted an afternoon of tasting, sipping, and mingling at our fourth annual tasting event showcasing the very best food, wine and beer that the San Luis Obispo region has to offer.  This year’s event was again at the beautiful and historic Jack House & Gardens in downtown San Luis Obispo and guests enjoyed the sounds provided by History of Painters and Dave Burns.  All proceeds will go to United Way’s Community Impact Fund, providing support to local programs focused on education, income and health.  United way would like to thank our volunteers, in-kind donors, vendors and event sponsors, The Mortgage House, The Krush 92.5 FM and UGS, as well as the energetic and dedicated Cal Poly students who made Flavor of SLO 2012 possible: Lisa Hillebrecht (team leader), Sarah Cooper (beverage vendors), Alyssa Santos (marketing), Allison Sasscer (event coordination), Quinn Thompson (food vendors) and Courtney Wen (marketing).  Photos and the date for the 2013 event will be coming soon at FlavorofSLO.com.

Innovation Awards

On Wednesday, June 6 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. we will be honoring our volunteers and loyal contributors at our Annual Recognition Event.  We will also announce the recipients of the Community Impact Fund grant awards and the Innovation Award.  RSVP by May 31 to Jessica Blum at (805) 541-1234.

Youth Board Awards $3,000 in Grants

Youthboard - $3000 grants

The United Way Youth Board recently allocated three $1,000 grant awards to local groups that have created projects having a positive impact on youth (up to age 19).  All three groups are based within San Luis Obispo County and their projects/programs are carried out within the county.  These activities allow the youth group planning and implementing the project or program to gain valuable knowledge and skills.  All applications received were peer reviewed by members of the Youth Board, our group of high school students seeking to increase philanthropy and leadership in San Luis Obispo County youth, and improve programs to better serve our community.  Grants this year were awarded to Improvement of Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County’s Sinsheimer School Based Program, Estero Bay Youth Coalition’s Fun Friday, and Restorative Partners’ Juvenile Hall Project.
